Climate, Migration, and Religion
Over the next generation climate change will force millions to relocate. The world’s religions can lead the way and intentionally welcome displaced persons, successfully integrating them and their religions and cultures into existing social structures. The success of such an unprecedented humanitarian effort will require a universal commitment to spiritual maturity and reconciling millennia of violent history. Failure to accept responsibility for this migration will result in famine and political chaos. Participants will learn what individuals, religious organizations, and civic communities can do as we prepare to “welcome the stranger.”

Introduction to Interfaith Dialogue
This class can be presented at a “100” level or in a more advanced format. Subjects include: a definition of interfaith dialogue, the surprising religious diversity of Kansas City, why interfaith dialogue is so urgently needed. Participants will learn basic terminology, be warned of potential “pitfalls,” and be equipped with four popular “next steps” for congregations, businesses, organizations, or neighborhoods.

Voluntary Simplicity
Every religious system teaches voluntary simplicity as a spiritual discipline. Participants will be invited to explore how they can embrace voluntary simplicity and thus grow in awareness of the Sacred in the world and in their lives. We will also look at how our culture frustrates the individual’s efforts to “live simply so that others may simply live.”

Personal Faith Development
How is it that a person grows in their appreciation of the Sacred and discovers their place in the world? Building on the research of James W. Fowler in “Stages of Faith,” we will examine the personal journey of religious exploration and the influence of the family-of-origin, peers, and one’s culture. Participants will be equipped with a new way to experience their own spiritual journey and to encourage others in their searching and questioning.
